For centuries, the power pyramid represented the way
societies were organized and run. The person at the top could be an elder, a
religious or spiritual advisor, a natural leader, or someone who took power by
any means.
The closer one was to the person at the top, the more
power/influence, the individual had. Eventually, those close to the top became “gatekeepers” who
drew strength from the ability to control access to someone with even greater
power.
As a result, the people far from the top, e.g., those at the bottom of
the power pyramid, had very little, if any, say in the way things were run or
done. There were exceptions, of course, but the fundamental
character or nature of these social and political organizations have remained
the same.
Yet a change is occurring. There is a growing realization
that the power pyramid, and its associated rigidity, is inherently limited. The
world is complex and changing too rapidly for one person to serve at the top.
Smart leaders, therefore, are turning into facilitators. They are achieving
success for the organization or the political system by enabling others to
succeed at their individual jobs.
The ultimate facilitator is the Jewish Messiah. Like the
first Jewish leader, Moses, the Messiah will be self-effacing and humble before
all men, women, and children. As a G-dly person, his goal will be helping people
reflect the inherent spark of G-dliness with them. Currently, the Messiah is hidden.
However, the world he
represents is breaking upon us like the dawn.
